Romero Britto, many people particularly in South Florida, Brazil and the Latin community knew about Romero Britto long before he became the modern Pop Art icon he is today. I am writing this after seeing Romero Britto products in a gift store Mufungo.com. We have all been in a store or shopping on line and come across something that stops us and creates the desire to look, explore and touch a particular item. I was stopped when I saw the colors and uniqueness of Britto, and I was also ask by a friend what I thought of Romero Britto. Starting off and not being Latin or having a lot of knowledge about modern art, I spent a few hours looking and learning about Romero Britto. Here is what I learned:
Romero Britto was born in Recife, Brazil in 1963. Born with the gift of art and Self-taught he at a very early age painted on surfaces such as newspapers. In 1983, he traveled to Paris where he was introduced to the work of Matisse and Picasso. He combined influences from cubism with pop, to create a vibrant, iconic style. Some will say we develop as we grow, well Britto went to New York and spent some time there and I am sure it had great influence on his early years in the United States. However, it is my opinion that the early works on the streets of Miami were he used newspaper and colors that cost very little to create these interesting drawings and paintings that moved people. This new art form gained a pop culture following in Miami and that is where Britto was really born. He still has his core in the culture of south Florida.
Having grown up in Brazil and the culture of celebration and vibrate colors it is clear that influence had a primary effect on the art of Romero Britto. Britto gained his first real national spot light after being in the United States for a few years, Michel Roux, founder of Absolut Vodka’s Absolut Art Ad Campaign, happened by Britto’s first studio in Coconut Grove, Florida. Roux quickly asked Britto to reinterpret the famous bottle, which would be published and seen by millions. Consistently challenging himself, Britto has completed other corporate works for Movado, Disney, Enrico Coveri, Pepsi, the United Nations, BMW and Royal Caribbean Cruises. Romero Britto has one main art gallery in Miami, on South Beach on Lincoln Road.
